All Aboard To Summerville
Track 1 - We are in the cab as the conductor radios the highball for the train to depart Grand Junction, the main station at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. The train departs right on time at 9:00am.
Track 2 - South of Chattanooga, the railroad passes through Rossville, Georgia, and immediately begins the ascent up Missionary Ridge. We are at the edge of Rossville as #4501 works up the grade.
Track 3 - At the same time the previous track was being recorded, our equipment in the cab of #4501 recorded the sounds at the train assaulted the grade.
Track 4 - Further up the grade, #4501 slips in the distance as she climbs Missionary Ridge.
Track 5 - #4501 whistles through the quite town of Chickamauga, Georgia.
Track 6 - North of Rock Spring, Georgia, we are again in the cab as #4501 works a hill into the small village.
Track 7 - We are in a wooded area just north of Rock Spring as #4501 passes on the hill.
Track 8 - Just north of Lafayette, Georgia, #4501 whistles for a crossing and clanks by on a short hill.
Track 9 - South of Lafayette, the railroad goes through rural country that is not easily accessible. Climbing upgrade as the track changes creek valleys, the train passes in the woods along Martindale Road.
Track 10 - Back in the cab, #4501 has turned, been serviced, and coupled to the other end of the train. At 2:00pm, the train departs Summerville on the return to Chattanooga.
Track 11 - After crossing the Chattooga River in downtown Trion, Georgia, the railroad climbs upgrade out of town. Just north of Trion, #4501 is barking as she nears the crest of the grade.
Track 12 - Back in the rural country south of Lafayette, the train is on the grade to Martindale as she passes through the woods. The fireman is obviously keeping up with the demand for steam as #4501 is popping off as she passes.
Track 13 - We are back in the cab as #4501 climbs the grade to Martindale. The engine slips on leaves that have fallen on the rails, and pops off as the engineer shuts the throttle.
Track 14 - Reaching the top of the grade, #4501 barks past and whistles for a crossing as she starts downhill.
Track 15 - At Noble, Georgia, #4501 whistles for Glass Road and passes the microphone in a quiet neighborhood.
Track 16 - At Rock Spring, we are in the cab as #4501 performs a photo run for her admirers.
Track 17 - For fans of a steam engine at work, the highlight of the northbound run to Chattanooga is the climb up Missionary Ridge south of Rossville. We found a spot on a ridge over the tracks along Overlook Road at Warren Terrace, Georgia, though with the trees there is not much of a view. We’d like to think the loud report of fire came from the nearby Chickamauga Battlefield National Historic Site.
Track 18 - From our perch in the cab, #4501 works the northbound climb up Missionary Ridge.
Track 19 - Further north up the grade, #4501 passes through a residential area built into the valley the track follows to the summit at Missionary Ridge, Georgia.
Track 20 - After passing through Chattanooga, the train’s route climbs upgrade toward the Tennessee Valley’s property, which was relaid on an abandoned Southern Railway line that was moved to bypass Whiteside Tunnel. The last leg of the trip involves a short but steep hill bringing the track to the level of the old right-of-way. From the TVRM’s East Chattanooga property, #4501 is wide open as she makes a run at the hill.
Track 21 - In the cab, the train runs for the hill to the TVRM. Once a vehicle gets in the clear on Chamberlain Street, the engineer pulls the throttle wide open and #4501 gets up to her fastest pace of the day. She’ll need the momentum to get the train over the hump! After getting up the hill, the engineer whistles a warning before the train passes through Whiteside Tunnel and brings our program to a close.
