A Steamy And Stormy Spring Morning
It’s a beautiful spring morning. Songbirds are singing as the distant wail of a steam whistle is heard. Then from the other direction the exhaust of an accelerating steam locomotive is heard. As the train charges past and into the distance, another train whistles off and gets underway as a third train is heard approaching and working upgrade. As a parade of steam trains passes, a roll of thunder is heard in the distance. As the storm approaches and the rain begins to fall, the birds head for cover. Soon the storm has passed, and the songbirds emerge from hiding and again take center stage. It’s an impressionist’s painting in sound of the sounds of steam railroading in a natural environment.
How it was done… The recording of nature sounds was created using two different recordings. The sounds of morning birds were recorded near the Shawnee National Forest not far from Grand Tower, Illinois, during the recording of 2016’s Sounds Of Railroads On A Spring Morning. The thunderstorm was recorded from our garage in Dongola, Illinois, on a July evening in 2013.
The railroad sounds were recorded between 1990 and 2016. The sounds are combined into a single continuous track, and at any given time anywhere from one to three trains can be heard.
