    Description

One (1) Car Arrival Notice Postcard
    Des Moines Union Railway Company
    Original railroad-issued item
    Vintage mid-1960s
Item consists of both parts of a two-part form.
    Background
:  The DMU was a terminal railroad owned equally by the Norfolk & Western and the Milwaukee Road.
When a freight car arrived at the DMU rail yard (via N&W or the Milwaukee), the DMU would notify the receiving shipper by U.S. Mail, using this two-part form.  The DMU would fill out the top part; and the carbon paper coating on the reverse side transferred the information to the second part, which was a postcard.  Then the postcard was mailed to the receiving shipper, advising it to telephone the DMU and "advise where the car should be placed for unloading, unless your Standing Order governs."
(Why the railroad didn't telephone the shipper in the first place, I have no idea.)
The postcard is preprinted with 4
¢ postage, which was the postcard rate from January, 1963 to January, 1968.
Seller was on the Board of Directors of the DMU in the early 1980s.
