Description
Biloxi, Mississippi lies directly on the Mississippi Sound, with barrier islands scattered off the coast and into the Gulf of Mexico. In 1699 French colonists formed the first permanent settlement in French Louisiana. In 1763 the British took over after the Seven Years’ War except the colonies west of the Mississippi plus New Orleans which was ceded to Spain. British rule persisted from 1763 to 1779, followed by Spanish rule from 1779 to 1810. In 1811 Biloxi and related area was taken by the U.S., making it part of their Mississippi Territory. Mississippi and Biloxi with it, was admitted as a state to the union in 1817. Biloxi was incorporated in 1838 as a township.

n 1870, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was constructed through the southernmost section of Harrison County, connecting New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile Alabama. A northern transportation route into south Mississippi was provided by the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad at the turn of the 20th century. These railroads provided an inexpensive means for both industrial and recreational development. Besides the weather, other tourist attractions included seafood restaurants, swimming, golf, schooner races, sailing to offshore islands and recreational fishing.

uring this period, the first to open was the “Great Southern Hotel” in 1903, a 3-story building of wood with 250 guest rooms. In 1926 the Edgewater Gulf Hotel with 400 guest rooms and a formal dining room with fine china and linen tablecloths. Guest that arrived in south Mississippi by train could disembark at the rail station on the hotel grounds at Edgewater Park. The hotel complex was situated on 600 acres that included gardens, a golf course, tennis courts and a glass-enclosed swimming pool. The Edgewater Gulf weathered the Great Depression and retained its grandeur through the 1960s, but closed in 1970, unable to compete with newer hotels. In 1971, the grand hotel was demolished.

his card, published by “Biloxi News” It is good condition except for an abrasion, surface missing on the upper left edge. Other than that the corners and edges are intact and the image is clean and clear.
