From the pattern: "Tired of the same old outfits? Want a new look? Have a little fabric left over from your latest outfit? This pattern is for you!The addition of a round Bertha to your wardrobe is just the answer.
Berthas were often used to update and extend a wardrobe. They did everything from cover a low neckline for day wear, to add warmth to a light bodice. Careful examination of many of the photographs of the Era show fitted bodices with removable Berthas. Berthas require little fabric and are easy to make. With the addition of a Bertha your simple fitted bodice and skirt has a completely different look. This pattern is for a reversible Bertha with a self-fabric ruffle, although the Bertha can be left plain and trimmed with braid or ribbon. It is designed to be worn over a fitted or gathered bodice. Detachable collars were worn over the Bertha to complete the look. (Timeless Stitches pattern TSA-520) or try a simple crocheted collar.
Suggested fabric and trims: Your fabric will depend on your planned use. Any of the fabrics used for your bodices will work for your Bertha. You will want to bring the colors and trim choices from your bodice into your Bertha. Or choose a color from your bodice and trim with totally different ideas for a completely different look. The look of your Bertha is limited only by your imagination and the fabric and trims thay you can find that are "of the Era."
The pattern calls for Approximately 1 yard of fashion fabric and 1 yard of lining fabric. 2 buttons and cord of slim braid for loop. Trims of your choice.
