Description
This vase was produced by Elkington & Co, Birmingham, England using their trademark "Elkington Plate" silver-plating process. It was supplied to Canadian Pacific Railway by A T Wiley of Montreal.
An attractive early Art Deco like design with a round base, hexagonal centre and waved rim and the letters "CPR" engraved to the base.
Maker's marks on the bottom of the vase include the date mark "Y" inside a bulbous square which dates it to 1910.
These vases were used in Canadian Pacific Railway's dining cars which operated on passenger services across Canada from 1885 until the 1970's.
They would typically be used to hold seasonal flowers and are heavily weighted to the base to prevent them toppling over whilst the train was in motion.
This vase is Elkington & Co's model 21880, standing c. 18cm/7 inches tall, c. 10.5cm/4 inches in diameter at the widest point and weighing c. 720g/25 ounces.
With minor marks or wear to plate (please study the photos but ignore the unavoidable reflections) this vase is in very good antique condition.
